How the Fundamentals of Design Course Changed My Perspective

As a first-year student exploring the vast possibilities of creativity, taking the "Fundamentals of Design" course was an experience that reshaped how I view the world. Before the course, I thought design was simply about making things look attractive, but I quickly learned that it’s so much more—it’s about purpose, functionality, and connection. Discovering the Essence of Design One of the first lessons we learned was defining design. It isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about solving problems and communicating ideas effectively. Every poster, building, or app has a story, and design elements like lines, shapes, colors, and textures serve as the words in that story. We also explored design principles like balance, contrast, rhythm, and emphasis. These principles taught me that good design isn’t accidental—it’s intentional. For instance, the way symmetry creates balance or how contrast draws the eye can dramatically influence how a design is perceived. A New Lens on the World...
