How the Fundamentals of Design Course Changed My Perspective

As a first-year student exploring the vast possibilities of creativity, taking the "Fundamentals of Design" course was an experience that reshaped how I view the world. Before the course, I thought design was simply about making things look attractive, but I quickly learned that it’s so much more—it’s about purpose, functionality, and connection.

Discovering the Essence of Design

One of the first lessons we learned was defining design. It isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about solving problems and communicating ideas effectively. Every poster, building, or app has a story, and design elements like lines, shapes, colors, and textures serve as the words in that story.

We also explored design principles like balance, contrast, rhythm, and emphasis. These principles taught me that good design isn’t accidental—it’s intentional. For instance, the way symmetry creates balance or how contrast draws the eye can dramatically influence how a design is perceived.

A New Lens on the World

This course didn’t just teach me concepts; it changed how I see everyday life. Suddenly, I began noticing the thought behind advertisements, the layout of my favorite apps, and even the design of my university campus. I became curious about how elements like color schemes and typography affect how people interact with their environment.

The Most Impactful Lessons

One of the most memorable parts of the course was studying color theory. I realized how colors evoke emotions and can communicate messages even without words. Another highlight was exploring texture and space, which brought a new depth to how I think about physical and digital designs.

Through class discussions, projects, and personal exploration, I understood that design is everywhere, shaping how we live and experience the world.

Personal Growth and Future Inspiration

This course wasn’t just academic—it was deeply personal. It sparked creativity in me that I didn’t know I had. I now feel inspired to experiment with design, whether it’s creating content for my podcast or working on art projects.

The Fundamentals of Design has given me a foundation to build on, and I’m excited about where this journey will lead. This isn’t the end of my relationship with design; it’s just the beginning.
